The Moontower Saloon in way deep South Austin is one of the best new bars in Austin! Actually, it just Won the Best New Bar Award in the Best of Austin Chronicle Readers Poll. I went there again Friday night for an old Friend’s 40th Birthday Party, it was great! They opened in December of last year and have taken Austin by storm. In only the first few weeks open, the dirt parking lot could not accommodate all of the customers, forcing parking out along both sides of the very busy Manchaca Road. A short-term solution to fix the dangerous situation was to lease the neighboring property for paid parking. Now, there is no longer a need to pay in the lot, they must have bought it or worked out another deal. But they also recently purchased the land behind them, totaling over 10 acres and plan to break ground on a 20,000 sq. ft. dancehall!

The current building is an old renovated little house, with decking added. But the real treat is the outdoor beer garden area. Complete with picnic tables, festive lighting, burn pits, washers and other games, yard art, and food trailers.

And the people make it special, old friends and new from South Austin to all parts of Austin and out of towners, too. It is even dog friendly for pets on leashes.

On Friday night The Damn Torpedoes, a Tom Petty cover band, played the beloved tunes of TP & the HB’s!! They were fantastic and will surely catch them again.

Beer. Let’s not forget about the beer. It has a full bar inside and patio bar. With at least 30 taps. Mostly consisting of premium craft beers. Lot’s of local goodies as well as other great national and imported treats! I usually get the local (512) IPA, but there are many other choices for your drinking pleasure!
